Family On Fire - Australia
We have SOLD our home! 🏠 Loving our new rental We have SOLD our home! 🏠 Loving our new rental which we are sharing with friends who have moved overseas but come back to occasionally for business and to see family & friends.

We are so very proud of our whole family who helped with all the home improvements to get a suburb record for an old home. ❤️

Oh and our daughter found something amazing and shining in our garden after 15 years being lost!

Now waiting for the cash to come in! Check out our latest blog post to see what FamilyOnFIRE are going to do with it! (Link in our bio)

House selling tips needed!! We are in the proces House selling tips needed!!

We are in the process of getting our house ready for sale - we have lived here almost 19 years and have never done this before! We want to do all the right things to ensure we get the best possible price - it will make a huge difference to our FIRE goal which is getting so much closer 🔥

We are doing most things ourselves to save $$$, but have invested in putting in a new driveway as the old one was cracked and dangerous. So far we have:

✅ Tidied up our garden, planted some natives and added black mulch to the garden beds
✅ Fixed things that should have been fixed a long time ago 🙈
✅ Painted our fences in Dulux Ticking colour (looks amazing!)
✅ Freshened up the paint inside in areas that needed it

We renovated the entire house about 4.5 years ago, so thankfully it is quite fresh inside!

Do you have any other pointers that could help us maximise our sale price? Anything we should avoid doing? We don't want to overcapitalise and we are on a very tight budget.

Any help would be very welcome!

Trish (and Cam) x

Have we mentioned that we think we have discovered Have we mentioned that we think we have discovered FIRE Magic? 🔥 Somehow circumstances have evolved in our lives and our trusty spreadsheet has shown us something amazing! Our investments are now doing the heavy lifting for our FIRE plan and we are on "auto-pilot" for Fat FIRE 🔥.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Basically, we have realised that when we reach FIRE, we can move into our beach house (currently rented as an Airbnb) and own it free of charge! Our diagram here shows how it works, but for a more in depth, step-by-step explanation, see our blog post (link in bio).⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Part of our plan to achieve this FIRE Magic is to sell our current home and rent a home (closer to our kid's school - yay!) until our kids all finish high school and we can retire to the beach 🏖️. We are so excited! 🥳⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Right now, we are doing lots of hard work during our latest lockdown to get our house ready for sale. Still frugal and doing most of it ourselves 😂⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Looking forward to sharing this new part of our journey with you!

👋 FIRE community! Here checking in from Melbour 👋 FIRE community! Here checking in from Melbourne where we are in Stage 3 lockdown and wearing masks is compulsory as of midnight on Wednesday. We hope everyone is safe and that your FIRE journey is able to continue.

We are super-grateful that our years of hard work and frugalness are sustaining us right now! It makes the uncertain future much less scary ❤️

Where are you from and what kind of restrictions are you dealing with at the moment?
Hi FIRE community! 👋 We have been a bit quiet o Hi FIRE community! 👋 We have been a bit quiet on social media during this pandemic! Cam & I have been super-busy with three kids schooling from home while Cam has worked huge hours and I have been ramping up my side hustle of social media management (whilst running my other home-based business and helping the kids with their schooling - yes. I am a bit crazy 😜). ⠀
⠀
We feel very blessed that Cam still has a job and my own business has not suffered too greatly. We are hopeful that things go back to as normal as possible for everyone soon and that our F.I.R.E goal dates is still in sight when the pandemic is over.⠀

When aiming for FIRE the #1 rule is spend less tha When aiming for FIRE the #1 rule is spend less than you earn and save/invest the rest. If you are like us and wish to speed up your FIRE journey (yes, we are an impatient family!), side hustles are a great way to increase your income so that you can achieve financial independence sooner. ⠀
⠀
Personally speaking (Trish here), my side hustle is creating content for and managing social media accounts for a few small businesses 💻📱. This is something I absolutely LOVE to do (bonus! ❤️) and I can easily do it from home around my own small business and three kids. ⠀
⠀
Cam and I love to encourage our friends and family in their own side hustle ventures (Cam & I are passionate about small business and love to mentor people starting out) so we have just created a blog post with 10 side hustle ideas that may be of help to you too! Find the direct link to the post in our bio.⠀

On a different note: I purchased this gorgeous chunky wool cardigan recently when I was on an interstate trip at a local op-shop for only $12 - score! 🙌 Do you love to op-shop too? It is such a brilliant way to save money on clothing and is even better for the environment 🌏 I also love the thrill of finding something unique 😊⠀

Our bookworm daughter absolutely adores finding books on our op-shop trips. We have found so many amazing books for only $1 or $2 📚⠀

Wishing you all a happy Valentines Day! Thank you Wishing you all a happy Valentines Day! Thank you to Cam for my gorgeous flowers 💐 ❤️ .

In true Family on FIRE style, the flowers are placed on our dining table we’ve had since we married almost 18 years ago. It used to be my Grandparent’s. It is worn, weathered and scratched, just the way we love it ❤️ .

Happy New Year FIRE community! As usual, Cam and I Happy New Year FIRE community! As usual, Cam and I have started the new year discussing our goals for the year ahead. We are so excited to see the money snowball really working for us this year! FIRE, here we come! 🔥⠀
⠀
The basic rule to get that money snowball moving to the right is to get rid of all personal debt and start increasing your income-making assets (i.e dividends, rental income, etc.). ⠀
⠀
We'd love to hear where you are at with your snowball, please share below! 👇👇👇⠀
⠀
Cam has written a new blog post discussing the money snowball in more detail as well as sharing our 1/3 rule - with the three steps that we use to build diversified passive income to reach FIRE. Link to the post in our bio. 😊 ⠀

Before we had kids, Cam and I decided that once we Before we had kids, Cam and I decided that once we started our family I would stay at home to take care of them while they were small. We adjusted our budget to allow that to happen and I feel so blessed to have had that opportunity. As our kids have grown, I still wanted to be there for them before and after school and on holidays so over the years I have run small businesses to allow me to work from home and have the flexibility to work around my kids needs. This way I am still contributing to our family income and our FIRE goals, but we have the balance that our family needs. ⠀
⠀
I took this photo on a rare day that I worked outside of the home and it was so nice to have an excuse to doll myself up a little! I currently run a small business manufacturing and selling a particular baby product, I also write social media posts for other businesses as my side hustle.⠀
⠀
Do you work from home too? What kind of work do you do? I'd love to know, so please share!
Our Family On Fire is celebrating this week! Our Our Family On Fire is celebrating this week! Our two boys have birthdays one day apart, so it is always a busy time filled with family, friends and fun ❤️ . Our daughter's birthday is also one day apart from mine (Trish), I really don't know how we have managed two times in our family to have birthdays one day apart - there are only 5 of us! ⠀
⠀
Do you have close birthdays in your family too? Or is it just us 🤣
I don't know about you, but I find it hard to resi I don't know about you, but I find it hard to resist buying more than I have written on my shopping list when just "popping in" to the supermarket! It is a sure-fire way to blow our weekly budget and it's almost always things we don't actually need, but they are on special, so I must need them - right? 😜 To avoid this kind of temptation, I have found that grabbing a hand basket at the entrance, rather than a shopping trolley stops me from filling it with things that we don't really need. ⠀
⠀
Do you have any tips for avoiding the temptation of buying things you don't REALLY need? I'd love to hear them! ⠀
⠀

We are enjoying the school holiday break at our be We are enjoying the school holiday break at our beach house (which we also rent out as a holiday rental / Airbnb). Our kids love to surf, but they grow out of wetsuits so quickly! They are so expensive to buy new, so I am always on the hunt for second hand ones in op shops. I scored these two at the local Salvos store while we are away for $13 each! They will fit our eldest and be passed onto our younger two when they grow into them - great value for money!
6 years ago today Cam and I had a bit of a bumpy r 6 years ago today Cam and I had a bit of a bumpy ride - I had brain surgery to remove a golfball-sized benign brain tumour, known as a Meningioma. I had been diagnosed by accident 12 months prior and it came as a huge shock of course! Having three small children at the time, it certainly hit home how fragile life is. ⠀
⠀
Thankfully, the surgery was a complete success and I have made a full recovery with no sign of the tumour reappearing at my annual MRI's 🎉 🍾 . (Top left image is of my original MRI, the tumour is the white patch on the left hand side of the skull).⠀
⠀
Cam and I have always ensured we have an emergency buffer of funds in case of emergency (unexpected life events, loss of employment, etc.), so thankfully the ordeal did not set us back financially at all. And thank goodness for Australia's public health system who funded my surgery and annual MRI's! ⠀
⠀
If you haven't already, please consider an inclusion in your budget for unexpected circumstances! Life is so precious, remember each day to not take it for granted. Tell your family and friends how much you love them, and often ❤️
This is a great way to save money! 💰 We do thi This is a great way to save money! 💰 We do this whenever possible. We buy items in bulk, for example, olive oil, and then decant it into a smaller, more manageable sized bottle. The price per litre is so much cheaper in the long term, even small amounts all add up over time. ⠀
⠀
What items do you buy in bulk? We are always looking for new ideas so please share yours with us! ⠀
Today marks 21 years to the day that Cam and I wen Today marks 21 years to the day that Cam and I went surfing together and ultimately became a couple forever ❤️. We still have a passion for the beach 🌊 and love that our kids do too. ⠀
⠀
In our 21 years together we have remained very careful with our spending and have made some wise investments to ensure that we can be financially independent in retirement, but we only realised this year that because of our choices, we may actually be able to retire within the next few years! Hello FIRE! 🔥⠀
⠀
I am so grateful that we have stayed on the path over all of these years. We even achieved our dream of purchasing a holiday house at the beach which we love dearly and have created so many happy memories in over the past 5 years. We have turned our beach house into a successful Airbnb which helps us pay the outgoings. It's important to enjoy life and that's not impossible to do whilst still aiming for FIRE 😊 ⠀
⠀
We look forward to getting to know you all and continue sharing our FIRE (Financial Independence / Retire Early) journey with you ❤️
My slow cooker bowl of almost 10 years cracked thi My slow cooker bowl of almost 10 years cracked this week 😭. A replacement bowl cost more than buying a whole new unit 🤦‍♀️. After some careful research, I’ve decided to try this Bellini slow cooker for $39 from Target. Fingers crossed I get another 10 years from this one! ⠀
⠀
Of course when I brought it home it needed to be inspected by our feline “quality control” 😂🐈.⠀
⠀
I am so looking forward to to trying it out (minus the cat)! Slow cooker meals are so affordable, you can purchase the cheapest cuts of meat and they will melt in your mouth 😋.⠀
⠀
I always cook up a double batch so that we have enough meals for two nights. A huge time and money saver! ⠀
⠀
Do you have any favourite slow cooker recipes you can recommend to me? I love trying new ones 😊
As a family of 5, our weekly grocery spend can eas As a family of 5, our weekly grocery spend can easily get out of control! 😬 It most certainly has in the past when we have not set a budget and spent without much thought. Luckily we've pulled our socks up recently and noticed a huge drop in our spending. Now that we are aiming for FIRE, it's much easier to change our spending habits - how good is it to have goals?!⠀
⠀
Pre-packaged meat is something we purchase each week, but we have discovered that often, the price at the supermarket's butcher or deli counter is actually cheaper. By ensuring that you are getting the best value per kilo each time, the savings will really add up.⠀
⠀
Our latest blog post lists our 6 tips for grocery shopping on a budget (link in our bio 👆). If you have any tips to add, please share them with us, we are motivated to find more ways to reduce our spend!⠀
